NDB (National Discount Brokers) - Very Satisfied with service and website. Rare but annoying crashes, but fast timeout. Good to trade. One price for all same side trades on same stock for same day. Can trade in cents. All realtime. Dinged by Smart Money (the same folks who turned me on to Davox - I've enjoyed the nice 33 to 7 run) very unfairly for inaccurate reasons. Been good to me....

Jack White - Awful website. Commissions too high; can't trade in cents or fractions smaller than 1/16. Slow to register trades. Website updated at night so your holdings are not updated instantaneously. Almost laughable. Commissions too high for stocks, especially if you trade large volumes. And on and on.

Tim,

I use the Waterhouse trading software but think their website trading is slow and you can only get 1 realtime quote at a time. Trading online using their software, you can realtime entire portfolio's. B+

Regards,

Tom

Tim, check in your area for a place like Cornerstone where you can trade through the ECNs like TNTO, REDI, ISLD, SOES, etc.. You're in SoCal, right? I'll bet there is one close to you. You can get a remote setup in your house for around 200 bucks a month, and you'll pay 20-40 bucks round trip. One second execution, you are the MM. Beats the Internet hands down. I bought KTEL yesterday 5 seconds after the news came across the Dow wire. I sold to the Internet traders. If you're set up for ISLD, for example, you can buy (or sell) to ISLD if they are on the ask (oe bid) instantly. I mean instantly, no waiting to see if some MM is going to take you or not. I really think you should check it out.

I've been using Discover since they were Lombard, and lately I've been really disappointed. Lately, I haven't been able to get in just before the market opens, so I've missed making some buys at the open. I guess their system is overloaded or something. The only good thing about them is that their main office is just across the street from my office, so it's easy to drop off checks to pay those margin calls.

Ameritrade: Pretty good, no problems with trading online EXCEPT i can put in a market order to buy (which i have since learned to NEVER do) and it seemed it always filled at 'Days High' 4 hours later. I also have a Fidelity account, only problem with it is it is INCREDIBLY SLOW to load and get thru all the screens (with a 56.6 modem).

Tim:

I've used Waterhouse, E Trade, AccuTrade, and Freedom Investments.
Both of my accounts are at Freedom now. $15/trade Internet, $25/trade by modem or phone...even if you have to talk to a broker. Executions have been quick, and as, or more important, they've been fair. They have a separate fee schedule for options that varies by quantity and price, but it's not bad. If a stock is moving, I put in a market order with no worry about them gouging me...unlike some other broker I've used.

Use three: Waterhouse (okay), Fidelity (okay), and Discover (bad).

All have given me some major problems. Fidelity actually has decent customer service and tries to make things right when they screw up; but higher commissions and slow system. Waterhouse is also slow, but sometimes fills my limit orders 1/16 or 1/8 higher/lower than I'd hoped. Discover is my least active account and the most problem-filled - and they appear unable/unwilling to make right any of their frequent mistakes.

I use Waterhouse, overall I am happy with them but they are the only online broker that I have used. Earlier this week it took them all morning to post DELL trades which made it very difficult to buy back in because I was not sure that I was out. Current positions long xyln at 16 3/8, long psft at 22 1/2, csco nov 70 puts at 5 1/4.

am doing Fidelity. Great executions once you pull the trigger but it takes FOREVER to get the d*mn gun loaded. Their screens make a glacier look fast. Maybe that't a result of the security feature. BWDIK.

My brokers:

Datek - generally good executions. Express server is slow at times, especially early in the session. Relatively inexpensive. Give 'em a B.

Schwab - Clunky interface, takes too long to enter a trade. Also very expensive. Give them a C-.
