Frank: 200 miles without repeaters? Dense wave division multiplexing gets denser

By Tim Greene
Network World Fusion, 11/04/98

SilkRoad, an upstart in fiber transmission technology, recently made big claims about revolutionizing the use of fiber-optic cable.

Likening SilkRoad's technological achievements to those of Newton and Einstein, the company says it can theoretically cram up to 10 terabytes/sec of data on a single fiber strand using a single laser. The company also claims that the technology will be able to send data in both directions simultaneously over the same strand.

Its signal can travel up to 200 miles without repeaters to strengthen the signal; four times the distance capabilities of dense wave division multiplexing. DWDM is considered the most advanced fiber transmission technology.

In addition, SilkRoad claims it can send all that data using just a single color laser. This approach differs from DWDM, which uses multiple lasers of different colors to establish separate channels.

SilkRoad plans to have its first product ready during the first quarter of 1999. The product will transmit more than 30 channels in one direction over a single fiber. Two-way transmission on the same fiber strand as well as more channels per fiber will come later, the company says.

The company is privately funded, and officials claim it has plenty of offers for more cash from some of its potential carrier customers.

Ericsson has a long track record of driving
innovation in the field of computer telephony
shown by the CT Expo "Best of Show" award
in the last 3 consecutive years, as well as
the Microsoft award for Best Back Office
Solution.

The company has it roots in providing
traditional voice systems, as the company is
the most successful international supplier
outside its home market.

Ericsson supplements its in-house capability
by working with the best in other fields, such
as Sun, IBM, Dialogic and Microsoft to name a
few. Successful cooperation coupled with
Ericsson's in-house expertise has created one
of the most exciting product portfolios
available in the market.

Wireless Office

Enterprise Solutions leads the field with
wireless office offerings, as they are based
on Ericsson's world leading solutions for both
indoor and cellular systems. DECT (Digital
Enhanced Cordless Telephony) and PWT
(Personal Wireless Telecommunications), local
or indoor solutions, offer high quality voice
and mobility. The systems can be scaled up
to accommodate the largest organization and
different sites can be networked to provide
site to site roaming. New dual- mode
DECT/GSM offerings are further extending the
capability of an internal system. Ericsson's
DECT solutions have been designed to be
integral part of its PBX offerings.

Ericsson has just announced its entry into
the standards based WLAN arena and is
actively developing the next generation of
high bandwidth HiperLAN/2 WLAN technology.

In the USA, Ericsson has a strong presence in
the private mobile radio (PMR) market, where
the focus is on mission critical
communications, for example, for mobile
dispatch workers of emergency services and
utilities.

As a founder of the Bluetooth interest group,
Ericsson is creating the next generation of
personal area communications for mobile
device and PC users.

Along with the dual-mode phone, Ericsson is
also driving wireless office solutions based on
cellular technology. Cellular phone users can
be hooked up to the office network to have
one phone and one number, no matter where
they are:

DWOS - Digital Wireless Office System, a
North

American solution

GSM on the Net - the GSM phone becomes
an office extension with voice packets sent
across the IP LAN

Computer telephony

Ericsson is a major player in computer
telephony and announces a range of PC and
server based offerings. The solutions provide
exciting new applications for call centres and
individuals alike. These, when combined with
our wireless, datacom and traditional voice

closely with Ericsson's IP development unit
that is creating innovative solutions. Ericsson
offers a complete range of data access
systems and voice over data support for its
customers. The solutions cover ATM, frame
relay, fiber, TDM, and IP networks.

Enterprise Solutions is launching enhanced
router/gateway offerings and enterprise
remote access servers. This has come about
through its acquisition of ACC -a leading edge
gateway technology company. Furthermore,
existing Ericsson PBX users will benefit from
unique add-on features, as well as cost
saving and high quality routing applications.

Ericsson is also involved in working on the
next generation "edge platforms" for IP
telephony and enterprise communications
services based on IP.

Ericsson will further strengthen its position in
this market by acquiring small innovative
companies as part of the "Ericsson string of
pearls" strategy.

Voice systems and converging networks
Ericsson has responded to converging
networks (voice and data) by offering
upgraded systems and new solutions. The
latest version of the popular MD110 PBX
system, the BC10, is the heart of an
enterprise's network, no matter what type of
network. Ericsson is a world leader in offering
advanced PBX solutions for general or
specialized applications, which can also be
integrated with call center functionality.
Ericsson's PBX solutions cater for any size
business and they include:

incorporate multi-sites and from 250 to
35,000 personnel

personnel

Never standing still Ericsson Enterprise
Solutions is also working with advanced
laboratory and customer trial activities
related to future multimedia communication,
such as e-commerce, Internet 3D worlds,
Internet portals and webcast applications.

Furthermore, Ericsson is a major driver of
standards in the fields of wireless, IP, and IP
services. The company is a member of major
standard bodies, e.g., IETF, ETSI, ITU, ECMA
and IEEE. In addition to standards
authorities, Ericsson has taken leading roles
within industry consortia, such as WAP Forum
and Bluetooth SIG, to create the enablers for
new ways of communicating in an enterprise.

Know-how in applying technology Producing
exceptional products and utilizing the latest
technology is not enough. Solutions have to
be thoroughly tried and tested, not just in
the laboratory, but in the field. Even then,
the most important aspect is the know-how
in applying technology to enable a benefit or
business advantage for users. Ericsson has a
long and well proven history in providing
leading communication solutions for real-life
situations that meets the need of users
worldwide.

With Ericsson as a partner, companies and
public institutions benefit by being able to
harness the power of new technology to
enable them to communicate more
effectively. Ericsson Enterprise Solutions
provides businesses with a competitive edge.
