VSE Watch columnist Ann Gibbon says that Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals alleges that a headline suggested it is the subject of a United States Securities and Exchange Commission investigation. The article described the failure of a company called Core Communications and its prinipal, Joshua Levine, to disclose it was being paid to do investor relations work for Inflazyme. The contract with Core and Inflazyme ended in January, 1997, as the story made clear, and Inflazyme says it has not been associated with Core since. The Globe notes that Inflazyme chief financial officer Michael Liggett claims the headline made it sound like Inflazyme was part of the SEC investigation, which is not the case. The Globe says the SEC was conducting its investigation of stock promotion over the Internet, where there is considerable growth in the illegal promotion of small company stocks.
