Emile,

The terror we feel for death is nothing metaphysical. We're just afraid it's going to hurt.

The fear of waiting for a biopsy result is not fear of being dead, it's fear of having to live with cancer.

The prospect of being dead worries me not nearly as much as the prospect of dealing with an extended and debilitating illness. I'd like to stay healthy until the kids get through college, and when I go I'd like to do it as comfortably as possible. That's about it.

I don't know if I'll be meeting the creator or just fading away, but I'm quite prepared for either. No "innate need for eternal life" around here.

Steve

<The deepest need of man is Eternal Life.>

You know, Emile, I have been arguing since my college term paper days that man NEEDED the concept of an afterlife, and thus invented religious beliefs. Are there any major or minor religions without a story of something happening after we die, besides our bodies rotting? Some people are afraid of death itself, some have had such a horrible time of it on this planet that they cannot imagine that this is all there is, and many cannot bear the thought of saying goodbye forever to the people they love so much. In any event, life can certainly seem short and cold.

Anyway, do you want to have a "what came first, the chicken or an egg argument" here?
