ZDNet Raises the Bar for Web Advertising With its Innovative 'Extramercials'

Compaq is First to Embrace 'Extra' DHTML Ad Deployment

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Raising the bar for Web advertising, Ziff-Davis (NYSE: ZD) today announced that ZDNet has innovated the "extramercial," a new form of Web advertising providing marketers the ability to un-intrusively convey their full campaign messages. Compaq Computer Corp., an enthusiastic supporter of Web ad innovation and advancement, has signed on as the first to take advantage of the powerful new ad implementation, with a campaign launching this month on the ZDNet home page ( zdnet.com ).

ZDNet, recent winner of the American Business Press CEBA award for Best Interactive Ad, is the first Web site to sell ad space within what it calls "Extra," the three-inch-wide column of unused space to the right of Internet pages. ZDNet has already been highlighting a range of content in this Extra space, including editorial features on its ZDNN news site ( zdnn.com ) and registration information on its home page. Extramercials, which are powered by Dynamic HTML (DHTML) technology, are placed within this space in the form of a microbutton that links users to a full-column ad.

By placing ads powered by Dynamic HTML (DHTML) technology in the Extra column, ZDNet is providing the following advantages:

-- For advertisers, the ability to significantly expand their creative

real estate, and un-intrusively increase the impact of their messages.

Extramercials are much bigger than standard Web ad banners, and

therefore allow for multiple links within a single campaign.

-- For Web users, the ability to get to the heart of the ad campaign

without having to leave the content page they visited. Extramercials

provide a window of content that is completely separate from the main

content page, allowing visitors to click through the campaign without

leaving the original page.

-- For content providers (i.e. ZDNet itself), the ability to provide a

powerful Web ad platform without compromising the space dedicated to

editorial.

"ZDNet has forged a reputation within the ad community as a proponent for the advancement of Web advertising," said Barry Briggs, Vice President of Advertising Sales and Marketing for ZDNet. "We're constantly looking for ways to help our advertisers increase the impact of their messaging, and we have challenged our creative and technology departments to develop more efficient and effective implementations. The Extramercial innovation we're unveiling today is exemplary of this initiative."

Compaq, the world's second-largest computer company and the largest global supplier of computer systems, is among several top ZDNet advertisers that have responded to this new development with enthusiasm, and was quick to sign on as the first company to deploy an Extramercial campaign.

"Web advertising is a key element of our marketing plan, and as such Compaq always has its eye on the latest developments," said Andrew Salzman, Vice President of Brand Strategy and Advertising. "We're excited to be the first to deploy DHTML in the Extra space. It lets Compaq get its full message across in a non-intrusive manner -- a positive step forward in Web advertising."

Because of the next-generation technology required to make Extramercials visible to Web users, it can only be viewed using the latest 4.0 versions of Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. As a leading provider of technology content on the Web, ZDNet attracts a tech-savvy audience. The majority of its 7.1M unique monthly visitors (Media Metrix) are currently able to view the DHTML ads. As more Web users adopt the latest browser technology, the reach of these ads will increase.

ZDNet is planning to expand the inclusion of the Extra column -- and thus the extramercial ad inventory -- onto several key parts of the site by the end of the year.

Compaq and ZDNet - History of Innovation

Compaq and ZDNet are also partnering on other innovative ad programs. During the 1997 COMDEX/Fall, Digital Equipment Corp. (now Compaq) sponsored a critically acclaimed and highly successful microsite on ZDNet called "Push," which generated a buzz during the COMDEX show for its zany coverage of events. Last month, the ZDNet creative team responsible for developing the "Push" site became the first non agency to win the American Business Press CEBA award for Best Interactive Ad. Compaq will again sponsor "Push" during the upcoming COMDEX/Fall trade show.
