DFR: I agree with almost all you've said. I was just blowing off steam. You know what . . . the Republicans have blown it. They talk about what people want to hear; lower taxes, personal responsibility, etc.; but they don't do anything about it and I think a lot of Republicans stayed away from the polls because they're sick of seeing a leaderless party and nothing happening. Reagan coalesced the Republicans into a cohesive party with definite goals accompanied by action. The current Republicans let opportunities fall into their laps and didn't know what to do with them, are intimidated by the Democrats, and don't have a definite plan of action. They were standing around waiting for something to happen and got run over by a tank. One reason they were voted in overwhelmingly in '96 was the Contract With America which espoused definite goals. They caught the Democrats flatfooted as the Republicans were caught this year. The Republicans went a long way to accomplishing many of those goals but communicated their successes poorly to the American public, letting the Democrats successfully demagogue the issues into negatives against the Republicans. Letting themselves being portrayed as intolerant, ala Trent Lott and Newt Gingrich, whether deserved or not, has hurt the Republicans tremendously. Personally I think the Republicans need new leadership at the top beginning with Newt and working down including Haley Barbor. They need to get away from being perceived as self righteous as conveyed by the Christian Right to whom they are aligned. They need to appeal to the emotions of people as successfully as the Dems since this is the tenor of the times instead of reasoned and rational debate. As far as this thread drifting away from Clinton and his shenanigans . . . well it's just a matter of time IMO before he will present another opportunity to expose him for what he is - pick one or more - a person of highly questionable character, a person who sold out his country for campaign money, a person who fathered an illegitimate child who he's desperately trying to keep under wraps, a person who hires goons to intimidate people from talking, a person who doles out favors to keep people quiet or to curry other favors, a person who recruits others to lie and shill for him, a person who thinks of himself first and foremost, etc., etc. IMO he is truly the lowest politician to inhabit our White House as president. Clinton is a scumbag and slimeball and he got into he White House the same way he's running the presidency...by lies, lies, and more lies. What's disheartening is how gullible the American public, not all but very very many, has become in believing the lies and distortions. No Republican could have gotten away with a fraction of Clinton's behavior. IMO Clinton's presidency, the L.A. riots, and the O.J. trial are among the greatest injustices done in this country I have witnessed during my lifetime. As with the O.J. trial in their ability to change the subject, Clinton has turned his misdeeds into a referendum against the Republicans. I can only hope and have faith that, as with O.J., he will eventually be exposed for what he truly is, even if he gets away with it, as he surely will. halfscot
