Key comments by Nettles yesterday.... note the part referring to the increase in customers making up the core business versus last year.

----------------------------

<< Nettles said Ciena will focus its efforts on generating business with upstart telecommunications companies.

"I think the importance of that sector of the market for 1999 is dramatically misunderstood. That's where the movement is underway," Nettles said in the interview.

Nettles said MCI WorldCom Inc. may also buy additional Ciena equipment in 1999. WorldCom, before its merger with MCI, slowed down its Ciena purchases last spring. At that time, WorldCom represented about 23 percent of Ciena's revenues and news of the slowdown slammed Ciena's shares.

Now, Ciena said it has about 14 customers, up from about two to three customers last year. >>

Thanks Sam. If Silk Road can do what they say they can, CIEN could be in trouble. I'm no expert on DWDM but if there are any on this board I would appreciate it if you would take the time to investigate silkroadcorp.com and tell us here what you think. In short they claim to be faster, cheaper, and more reliable than CIEN. Also they claim to have relationships with the Baby Bells and say they will be ready to ship their product in the 1st quarter of '99. Does that sound like something for CIEN shareholders to be concerned about?
