Following is an excerpt from an article on packet vs. circuit telephony. Obviously not new news, but it's the red cape being waved at the RBOC bull.

AT&T [plans to use] both circuit and packet techniques for the cable systems it will own when it closes its $48 billion purchase of Tele-Communications Inc. AT&T's public statements dwell primarily on VoIP on the hybrid fiber coax (HFC) cable networks, but company officials have also begun to acknowledge that they will first deploy circuit-switched techniques. A test is planned for Fremont, Calif., once the deal is finalized, says a source within the combining companies. "We will immediately go into the voice market, initially with circuit-switched gear because that's what's available now," said Daniel Shulman, president of AT&T WorldNet Services (Bridgewater, N.J.) at last months Internet World trade show in New York.
