"OS/2, which was actually a pretty good desktop OS, pushed hard by the largest computer vendor in the world, failed to make any inroads into the desktop market despite huge investment, good compatibility with existing applications, and better performance and stability than Windows.

Ahhh, although you are correct in the above statement, you have left out some major dynamics that have changed the playing field for Linux vs OS/2.

- Linux is not being pushed by one vendor. There are several that
want to see its succuss (including Intel IBM NOVL etc).
- Linux is showing up in a current atmosphere where many of the
major players would like to see MSFT taken down a few notches and
this will further encourage its use.
- Java and other open standards are starting to play a role to break
the prorietary barriers that OS/2 did not have the luxury to
rely upon.
- MSFT is being exposed by the DOJ for not playing fair with its
monopoly, they will have to tred extremely care not to further
dig themselves in the hole by taking too aggressive any action
against Linux.

Dont make the mistake of using the past to determine the future. Remember the saying "that was then and this is now".
