If the K6-3 part works at 350Mhz, but not at 450MHZ, then you would introduce it as a 350Mhz part. It may not offer more than a few percent improvement than the K6-2 but it would cost 50% more.

So how much would a customer be willing to pay for such a minor speedup? If it was not more than $15-$20 then the small increase in revenue would not justify the introduction of the new part.
