There is another possibility, overconfidence. All groups in the country expected to have a congressional shake up in this election. Dems and Reps both predicted a shift in favor of the Reps, it was just minimized by the Dems and exagerated by the Reps. There was a Dem backlash of all the "slander" hype. The shift...nothing happened.

Now there is a lot of chortling and attempts to rub the Reps noses in their bold statements of the past couple of months. It is possible that the Dem backlash could be repeated in the next election only this time for Republicans who are embarrassed at being laughed at by the Dems after this election and who are ashamed of themselves for sitting at home in their over confidence, not voting this time.
