Don: Siemens is definitely a company in transition - looking to shed their old skin and wrapping themselves in a broad cloth designed of new ideas.
Companies have to reinvent themselves. Sometimes it requires a make-over - sometimes a total revolution.
Every 5 years Mao started a revolution against himself. That's what kept him in power. Corporations, especially those steeped in technology, must create their own internal revolution if they're to keep up with, or ahead of a world in revolution.
Intel takes 20% of their annual profits and puts it back into R&D. That's a big reason why Intel remains unchallenged. They compete with themselves.
Siemens appears to be embracing good ideas and running with them, be it by acquisition or "Strategic Partnership." They will win simply by being bold and not being afraid of failure. To do nothing or do it with timidity is the death of invention.
I hope they like your number 6. I sure do.
