That's obviously the big prize for both parties. I mean, things are pretty even now, with Repubs holding a slight advantage. I think the next two years will be spent kissing voters' butts.

It could happen, in theory. But it will take several defeats before the Republicans are able to get rid of the extreme Right. Look at what happened to the Dems -- it took defeats in 1980, 84 and 88 before they could decisively silence the extreme Left.
