AltaVista content provider sold for $15 million

GT Interactive Software Corp. (GTIS) said Thursday it will buy
OneZero Media Inc. (OZM) for stock worth $15 million. OneZero's
interests include a Web portal, getwild.com, and
providing content and commerce features in the Entertainment
channel of search engine AltaVista. OZM also produces an
Internet-themed TV program, The Wild Wild Web, which is syndicated
by CBS's (CBS) Eyemark. GTIS chief executive officer Ron
Chaimowitz said the acquisition is a logical step in a strategy to
become a cross-media entertainment company.

Ever wonder how much to advertise on the Web?

Portals getting piggy?

Web portal sites Yahoo! and Netcenter are said to be trying to
charge online brokerages up to $10 million a year for advertising
placements. Earlier this year, America Online (AOL) successfully
negotiated similar agreements with brokerages at $12.5 million
each. In the case of Yahoo! (YHOO), the company is asking $10
million from Web Street Securities, The Wall Street Journal
reported. And Netscape's (NSCP) Netcenter set a price of $7
million in its negotiations with several brokerage firms. "What
the Internet companies are saying is you have to pay to play,"
said NationsBanc Montgomery Securities Internet analyst David
Readerman, the Journal added.
