Long distance IP-telephony tested by Digitcom in Russia

Digitcom corporation has announced that together with two Russian operators - Mezhdunarodny and
Mezhdugorodny telephone from St. Petersburg and Electrosvyaz from Rostov-on-Don they successfully tested
long-distance IP-telephony system. The system based on Digitcom IntraVoice CO telephone gateways, beside two
above cities, has a switch in Moscow as well. Also the partners are planning to establish a joint venture company
for commercial operating IP-telephony long distance networks. According to Jimmy Chin, Digitcom executive
officer, the current situation in this market in Russia enables to utilize efficiently the advantages of transmitting
voice traffic over Internet.

The two above mentioned Russian operators jointly serve 7,8 million customers. In 1997 the volume of services
of long distance phone communication in Russia was worth 8,2 billion dollars, international phone communication
- 1,5 billion dollars.
