Semiconductor Industry Association: September Chip Sales Jump
4.2 Percent, Or $414 Million, From August; $10.2 Billion is
Highest Total Since April - 04:11 p.m Nov 05, 1998 Eastern

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The world semiconductor market grew 4.2
percent in September, reaching $10.22 billion, according to the Semiconductor Industry
Association's (SIA) Global Sales Report. The sales represent a $414 million hike from
August's sales of $9.81 billion.

"These sales show the largest percentage jump for a September
in the last eight years," said SIA President George Scalise.
"This increases our optimism for stronger-than-expected sales
in the fourth quarter, as it is typically the most active period
of the year."

Each year since 1990, sales from August to September have increased at an average of 2.4
percent, with 3.6 percent the high in 1992. September is the second consecutive month to
show positive month-to-month growth and represents the largest sales total since April 1998.

September sales in all world markets rallied from August, with totals in the Americas,
European and Japanese markets increasing 4 percent, 6.2 percent and 1.2 percent, respectively.
The Asia-Pacific market climbed 5.3 percent due to increased shipments for consumer
electronics applications. September also marks the first month in which sales increased
unilaterally in all world markets.

In year-to-year comparisons, world totals show a 13.5-percent dip from September 1997.
Japan's market saw the most significant decline, 27.9 percent.

All figures in the SIA's Global Sales Report (GSR) represent a three-month rolling average of
sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), an
organization of 70 companies. A summary of September's Global Sales Report follows.
