<<I don't find myself all too concerned about Y2K problems that would result in nothing more than a temporary nuisance.

My concern resides with the power grid, weapons systems for national defense, and ultimately with the lack of awareness/readiness of the international community.>>

I agree with your comments, Ron. I was interested in the automobile chip because it is so widely mentioned in garden-variety Y2K articles and people ask me about it. Seems like it's basically a non-issue. ...Tim

Oil & Y2K Embedded Systems Problems:

Hi CK!

I was just thinking about the oil issue, and while it may have great negative effects on our economy & society, it may also present an interesting investment opportunity.

It just struck me, what if a significant portion of:

*Oil drilling facilities stop working
*Oil pipelines stop working
*Oil transportation infrastructure stops functioning

Since much less oil can be drilled and transported to market, the value (both strategic & economic) of available above ground oil would skyrocket, would it not?

On the other hand, if the Y2K scenario is real for the oil industry, it would make sense for the market to start discounting it sometime in the middle of next year in the price of oil.....

Your thoughts on the current severity of the embedded system problems in the oil drilling & transportation industry would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered taking out oil futures as we enter 1999?

TIA for sharing your ideas.

Last year state of Texas found that 35% of fire trucks purchased since 1985 had problems

Geez Cheryl.. That is very disconcerting. And we all realize that most Firefighting equipment is manufactured by a few businesses.

Hmmmm...

Regards,

Ron

Cheryl or anyone: on the not-so-serious-side; I'm looking for a copy of a "Twas' a Night Before 2000", or something like that (A play on Twas' the Night Before Christmas). I can't seen to relocate it. It wasn't on SI. Anybody have a link? Thanks. ...Tim
