Galaxy 4 satellite failure in May '98 gives an indication of Nov. 17th problems that may be experienced during the meteor storm. It makes for worthwhile reading.

"..the Leonids may be a different story" in terms of danger to satellites according to this site. (see 4th & 5th paragraph) They also suggest "more than 2500" satellites instead of 500 as referenced in the MSNBC article.
