The last time I got a jury summons, I got three in a row. This would have been my 3rd, 4th, and 5th time serving on a jury. The problem is, I had that thyroid problem going and didn't know what it was. All I knew was I absolutely couldn't handle being cooped up indoors with a crowd of hundreds; I could feel the panic rising with each (slowly) passing minute, and when lunchtime came I would bolt for the door and skip the afternoon session. Of course I got caught doing this, since during one of my long lunch absences I was called up for a murder trial. That miserable judge hauled me me me into court, threatened to throw me in the slammer and fined me $100 for avoiding jury service. He wasn't the slightest bit interested in my tale of badly frayed nerves, and since I wasn't seeing a doctor my symptoms constituted goldbricking. The bastard. I wouldn't know for another year that the problem was my thyroid going haywire.

You two ? I was lucky enough to check my PO box at Tahoe last weekend because I wanted to get my absentee ballot as I maintain my voter registration up there. Sometimes I get a bit lax at this box checking routine and let it slide a month or two but don't tell Freddy or TBG that. Lucky me. My jury summons notice was aging there and its for next Monday.

Now truth to tell, if it comes to that, I'll probably say something that just might suggest that I might not be desirable as a juror. I guess I figure I've done my civic duty above and beyond the call having put in over 21 years of active and reserve duty serving god and country, but it'll make a nice three day weekend and I hear some more ski areas might be opening up this weekend. Course if they sequester us, I'll ask for a suite at Harrahs.

PS: My advice to you, don't throw either jury summons away. Have both date-stamped, signed, notarized and recorded in the public record, just to be on the safe side. Better to be safe, this is a governmental matter.
