Thanks, Curtis for bringing to the fore some of the issues I was concerned about in my statement about their ability to operate in all operating environments. Yes, there are a plethora of analog line properties and potential impairments to consider that must be properly taken into account and engineered for. I have no way of knowing how they fare in this regard. I'd be interested in seeing some benchmarks and their associated assumptions.

I would add intermodulation, aliasing products and total harmonic distortion, along with a couple of other "popular" ones, to the ones you cited... but your points are well taken, as always.

My question also remains unanswered, and that is what is the total spectral width required of their system?

Frank C.

It was interesting how you reached the conclusions that you did about SR. Quoting from the web site:

While the laser beam SilkRoad's technology uses is similar to that used in DWDM, our innovation does not require the tuned cavity on the laser (required to provide a specific wavelength). Instead, SilkRoad's system collects the channels (typically OC48) before they are introduced on the modulator. Customers can then input many OC3 through OC48 type signals using only one wavelength of light, either 1310 nm or 1550 nm or both. By stacking a set of data channels in a four-dimensional optical space, this technology is modulated onto the optical beam using an external optical modulator.

That means OC-48 is merely one stackable input of the QPSK stack. How about OC-192,000 which is near this era's Pure limit.

It is amazing to consider that ENRON will build their long haul using that mess of outdated, unmanageable, hodge podge of decohering colors to minimize throughput at maximum cost. CIEN has no option. They must buy SilkRoad or face the KT Boundary. In this case the boundary is non-conducting.
