LORAL SHARPENS FOCUS ON CORE LEASING AND DATA SERVICES BUSINESS
Business Wire, Nov. 6, 1998

Combines Loral Skynet/Loral Orion Satellite

Capacity Leasing and Operations

Loral Space & Communications (NYSE: LOR) today announced that it will align Loral's primary fixed satellite service (FSS) offerings -- satellite capacity leasing and operations, value-added services and data services -- to better leverage the company's core service capabilities and increase its global marketing strength. "This step is a natural outgrowth of our plan to build critical mass in each of Loral's four core business areas - satellite design and manufacturing, fixed satellite services, broadband data services and global mobile telephony," said Bernard L. Schwartz, Loral chairman and chief executive officer. "There are substantial synergies among our business units. By integrating them where appropriate and coordinating our market approach we are in a position to offer customers more capacity, more flexibility and more choices. In the process, we will improve productivity and shareholder value."

Loral Orion will increase its established presence in the global data services market by focusing on the growing demand for communications services in the areas of Internet access and applications, corporate data networking, broadband applications and U.S. government services.

Loral Skynet will expand the scope of its leasing business coupling Loral Orion's current capacity on the Orion I satellite with the capacity on Loral Skynet's current fleet, comprising Telstar 4 and Telstar 5. By mid-1999, with the launch of Telstar 6, Telstar 7, Orion 2 and Orion 3, Loral Skynet and Loral Orion combined will have a total of seven satellites in orbit, more than doubling capacity. "Loral Skynet has a long heritage of providing satellite capacity in the United States," Mr. Schwartz noted. "Organizing our satellite transponder leasing and TT&C activities under Loral Skynet on a global basis not only takes advantage of its well-earned reputation for superior customer service, but increases Loral's recognition and clout in the fixed satellite services marketplace. Similarly, Loral Orion, a leading provider of data services for multinational corporate customers, will now be positioned to capture the opportunities proliferating in data communications, such as Internet access, corporate data networking and broadband data services such as the Loral venture, CyberStar."

Together with SatMex and Europe*Star, both 49% owned by Loral, Loral's capacity on the Loral Skynet and Loral Orion fleets make up the Loral Global Alliance which, by the year 2000, is expected to have global coverage with 13 satellites in service carrying approximately 540 transponders.
