Lucent wins Singapore telecom
contract

NEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc.
confirmed Friday that it won a contract to supply a transmission and access
network to Singapore's StarHub consortium.

StarHub is a joint venture between Singapore Technologies Telemedia,
Singapore Power, Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. and British
Telecommunications Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BT.L) that plans to invest
about $1.5 billion in the next seven to 10 years on telecommunications
infrastructure.

Contracts handed out Friday represent the initial phase of StarHub's
investment. The total value of the contracts handed out to all companies
Friday is about $202 million, a Lucent spokeswoman said. She added that at
StarHub's request Lucent would not reveal the value of its contract, but said
it is a significant portion of the initial-phase work.

StarHub also gave contracts to Ascend Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:ASND -
news), Dutch software firm Cap Gemini and Sweden's Ericsson .

StarHub, which won its licenses when the Singapore government recently
deregulated the telecom market, is scheduled to start commercial service in
April 2000. Lucent said it hopes it will continue work with StarHub beyond
the value of the current contract.

''We are extremely pleased to have been selected by StarHub for this very
significant project,'' Michael Butcher, Lucent's chief executive of its
Asia/Pacific division, said in a statement.

Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent has about 1,400 employees in Singapore.
