They (and others) seem to keep harping on bidirectional transmission
on a single fiber. At lower speeds, this is old news (MFS Video has
been using it for years on their C-Cor/Comlux video net), and the Sams
book "Understanding Fiber Optics - 2nd Edition" from 1993 goes into it
in detail in chapter 12.

The trick is getting it to work reliably at speeds *over* OC-48, and
then getting it to the market at a competitive price. These solutions
are not competing with each other, they're competing against the cost
of pulling higher fiber counts. In the past 2 years, I've seen the
typical "fat" fiber in Manhattan go from 216 strands to 324 and now to
432.

I expect the initial market for these systems will be on long-haul
runs (for example, cross-country links by larger IXC's) where the sys-
tem can still be very expensive and yet cost less than running new
fiber. The price will have to come down in order for it to be cost-
competitive with pulling new fiber for LEC's and CLEC's.

It seems that MRVC has good speed and lower price than some of the
other systems, so if they can crack the IXC market and get a good
system out there, they should do well.

>Noam keeps saying they are working on strategic partners>
Don't be surprised if that partner is Seimens.
