Joint venture to create wireless OS

By Kristi Essick
Mobile Telecommunications equipment giants Ericsson, Nokia, and Motorola have teamed with Psion in a joint venture, Symbian, aimed at creating a common operating system for wireless information appliances, the companies announced last week.

The companies will focus on developing Psion's Epoc 32 operating system and licensing it to manufacturers of wireless information devices, such as smart phones and handheld communicators.

Psion will own 31 percent of Symbian; Nokia, Motorola, and Ericsson will each own 23 percent. Motorola, Nokia, and Ericsson will use the operating system in their own smart-phone and communicator products, but the deal is not exclusive, the Psion representative said; the companies are also working with Windows CE.

Psion Plc., in London, can be reached at psion.com. L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co., in Stockholm, Sweden, can be reached at ericsson.se. Nokia Group, in Helsinki, Finland, can be reached at nokia.com. Motorola Inc., in Schaumburg, Ill., can be reached at mot.com

No reason why Q can't license Epoc if it chooses?
