Very well said, Brees. But do you think a "chaotic slice" an inevitability, rather than a choice, in spite of having have those on either, and many sides glued forever to their particular rants?

Interesting post, Abdul Haq.

I sort of agree, and sort of disagree, with your central point -- that the last 30 years have been deceptively empty of real change and cultural innovation.

First, on the "disagree" part. I would argue that there has been enormous change, and enormous innovation, over the past 30 years. We have, in fact, been through a major technological-communication revolution, overlaid with a major commercial assault on virtually every aspect of life. (Did you see my post to Mr. K., where I ranted on about this?) The point is, however, for those of us who were not Silicon Valley whizzes or TV personalities or Madison Ave ad execs, it came like an unexpected whirlwind; we were more passive observers (and sometimes victims) than participants.

That brings me to the "agree" part. There has indeed been precious little creative innovation in the area of ideas - - in philosophy, the arts, politics, social thought...And people are often indeed stuck in what you so felicitously call the "push me pull you issues." But I would not look to political parties to "crack the egg to see what is peeking out." Politics is normally about horse-trading; and politicians won't crack the egg unless there a truly "chaotic slice" in the lining of the universe, to use your expression. And then, they are likely to see something peeping out that is not really there!! (They have a tendency to panic in emergencies.) So I guess it's up to you and to me, and to everyone else out there to crack the egg! I can assure you that there is something scratching away inside that shell, I just can't tell what it is exactly....

The Blue Bird of Happiness, perhaps? Or the iron bird of the Apocalypse? Or just another ho-hum chicken? Hmmmm...
