you should work as a private detective as a side job.

What a nice compliment. However, being paid would take away the fun.

To me investing is a matter of putting together puzzles. Each piece reveals a little more of the picture. The challenge comes in recognizing you're not dealing with a static picture --- the story changes --- nor are you operating in a static universe --- market fundamentals and even non-fundamentals shift sentiment in a way that skew the picture temporarily.

This week someone asked why I do what I do, and I said as an investor I wanted to know my companies so well I could recognize their breathing. And to that end I talk to engineers, researchers, analysts, fund managers, as well as top management within the companies themselves.

I make mistakes --- more than I like to admit --- but I like what the guy from Cisco said yesterday. "If we weren't making mistakes it would mean we weren't taking risks. . . and you have to take risks."

Have a great week-end!
