Newt Press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

202-225-2800MARTIN STATEMENT ON LIVINGSTON CHALLENGE
Washington, D.C. -- Christina Martin, Press Secretary to House Speaker Newt Gingrich, released the following statement today on Chairman Livingston's leadership challenge.
"Bob Livingston is a good man, a good legislator, and a good friend of the Speaker's. Speaker Gingrich is such a supporter of Bob Livingston that he passed over other senior Republicans in order to appoint him Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and he invested a great deal of personal time earlier this year convincing Mr. Livington to run for another term. Because of their long and close friendship and his great respect for Chairman Livingston, the Speaker was obviously saddened by today's announcement.
"Last Tuesday's elections were a tremendous disappointment to the Speaker and every other Republican. The question is not whether something went wrong, but how best to fix it. As architect of the Republican majority, Speaker Gingrich is determined to correct the mistakes of the past and implement a positive, issue-oriented legislative agenda.
"This election for Speaker will offer Republican members a clear choice. Newt Gingrich is a visionary leader who created the Contract with America; led Republicans in winning control of the House for the first time in 40 years, and helped hold that majority for three consecutive terms for the first time in 70 years."Under Speaker Gingrich's leadership, with a narrow majority, House Republicans were able to pass tax cuts, a balanced budget, and welfare reform. He has proven he can work with every Republican member as we build a new agenda -- beyond the Contract -- to advance our party and our country into the new millennium. That is proven leadership, and it will be the deciding factor in this race."
