Sky DTH Corners 518,000 in Latin America

The Sky digital satellite platform in Latin America reported 518,000 subscribers through Sept. 30, making it the leading satellite television service in Latin America.

Sky is offered in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile through the alliance of Brazil's Organizacoes Global, Mexico's Grupo Televisa, News Corp. and TCI International. Its closest competitor, DirecTV from Galaxy Latin America, is seen in 423,000 subscribers in 20 countries.

During the third quarter of this year, the three platforms Sky operates grew their subscriber base 28 percent over the previous quarter and a total of 179 percent during 1998 when compared to 1997.

NetSky, Sky's platform in Brazil, occupies the number one position in the DTH market in that country. Since June of 1997, NetSky has grown more than 745 percent, 74 percent of that growth in the second quarter of this year. In third quarter, NetSky grew 33 percent.

Mexico's Innova platform, which offers 157 channels, grew 20 percent in the third quarter and continued its leadership position in Mexico. Since June 1997, Innova has grown its subscriber base 500 percent. The platform has more than 70 percent market share in the Mexican DTH market.

On Sept 27, Sky Multi-Country Partners, the platform for the rest of the countries, launched its service in Chile. Sky President Mark Goldman said, "Our recent launch in Chile has drawn a phenomenal reaction from the public, with initial customer inquiries and sales results that exceed expectations."

Sky Multi-Country Partner's plan to launch its service next in Argentina followed by Venezuela and Peru.
