Hitachi, Equator to roll out VLIW processors for multimedia

TOKYO--Hitachi Ltd. and U.S.-based Equator Technologies Inc.
disclosed an ongoing partnership to jointly develop and commercialize
a high-end multimedia processor platform based on a very-long
instruction word (VLIW) architecture.

The Media Processor Series will be aimed at multimedia product
applications such as set-top boxes, video editing systems, game
machines, multimedia PCs, image processing systems for industrial and
medical applications, as well as network equipment,
according to the
two companies

Hitachi and Equator Technologies of Campbell, Calif., said the first
products are slated to appear at Comdex/Fall '98 in Las Vegas,
starting Nov. 16, with the first market introductions planned by the end
of the year.

The two companies have been working together on the processor
series since signing a collaboration agreement in January 1997. Under
the partnership, Hitachi and Equator Technologies have been working
together to create ICs and related software, including a compiler and
media library. Hitachi will fabricate the chips, and both companies will
have worldwide marketing rights.

"We expect that the Media Processor Series, which is a result of
Hitachi's VLIW technology and advanced semiconductor process, will
be utilized over a broad range of multimedia related products,"
said
Toshiakira Ikeda, general manager of the Strategic Business
Development Division/Information Group of Hitachi in Tokyo. "Hitachi
Ltd., in cooperation with Equator Technologies Inc., aims to make the
Media Processor Series a global de facto standard in the area of
multimedia."

In the second half of 1999 Hitachi and Equator said they plan to ship a
version specifically for digital TV applications that will offer an
improved cost-performance ratio.
Another version that offers enhanced
graphics support is planned for 2000.

"Ultimately, software tools that allow multiple uses for the same
architecture platform provide for a broad range of end applications,"
said Ron Bell, CEO of Equator. "The key differentiating factor for
Equator is our early focus on both end applications and software."
