WinStar Commstock climbs on upbeat outlook

WinStar Communications Inc. stock surged 15 percent Friday on what analysts described as an upbeat conference call Thursday evening, when the company made reference to expansion plans.

''They stated they were working out details prior to any kind of expansion plan,'' said Ken Hoexter, telecommunications equipment analyst with Goldman Sachs. Hoexter, who has a market outperform rating on the stock, said he thought it was up today because of the conference call.

WinStar's technology provides telephone service from switching station hubs to a customer's building via wireless technology that avoids the need to dig up streets to lay down telephone lines.

The five-year deal with Lucent, announced on Oct. 22, will provide WinStar with financing and equipment, but does not include an equity stake in WinStar.

''The Lucent deal validated their technology and more than fully funded their 40 city build out plan,'' Hoexter said.

''I think the stock is moving on the upbeat conference call,'' said A.G. Edwards telecommunications equipment analyst, David Heger.
