Fred,

Just because the markets in the USA are closed doesn't mean that foreign exchanges are also closed. Remember, when it's nighttime here, a market is open somewhere on the other side of the planet, and many of our stocks trade on foreign exchanges legally. There are also some closed markets in the US that trade after hours, but these markets are currently for the used by just a few brokers and, generally speaking, for their wealthier clients & institutional investments.

Fred, IMHO, the reason stocks gap as you said is because they don't trade 24 hours a day. If stocks were able to be traded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, there would be people that would trade them and gaps would never occur.

ECN traders and other recent developments have actually helped restrict the traditional market makers from "adjusting" their bids and asks. Traditional NASDAQ market makers don't like the ECNs, but they always figure out a way to work things out for themselves. The SEC, IMHO, should stop slapping the criminals on the wrist and start sending them to jail. The risk/reward ratio for scamming the public is so biased toward the reward side that it will never stop unless a few of the bad guys are taken back behind the barn and shot.
