Samsung Unveils 144-Mbit Direct RDRAM Chip
Andrew MacLellan

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has introduced a 144-Mbit Direct Rambus DRAM chip, a density breakthrough that should help next year's anticipated adoption of the new architecture in the PC market. Samsung will begin producing 100,000 of the devices in early 1999, boosting monthly production to a million units in the third quarter. The introduction bodes well for the computer industry, which will be largely dependent on higher-density 128- and 144-Mbit Direct RDRAM to reduce pricing premiums. Samsung has also rolled out a 144-Mbyte Direct Rambus in-line memory module to support its new ICs.
