Funny thing, Les. The one time I actually called in to a radio talk show, (on public radio, of course- no desire to be abused by Rush in person), it was on federal policy and health care. One Kathleen Hall Jaimeson was the guest, '96 or so, and she was lecturing about how partisan Clinton was being in blocking the Republican attempt of the time to "save" Medicare. I wanted to point out t that the problem wasn't Medicare, it was health care costs in general, and nothing was being done about the root problem. I also had to add there was plenty of partisanship when Hillary's botched plan came out, not much interest in fixing the system by Republicans then.

Being somewhat circumspect, she agreed. She also pointed out that the big health care fix of the time, managed care and HMO's, looked to be a one-shot fix, they reduced cost, but managed care costs increased at pretty much the same rate as health care costs in general. If somebody comes up with a serious approach to the problem from either side, I think it should be taken seriously. I see no indication that insurance companies are the solution, they benefit from higher costs as much as anybody.
