Christine,

Your instinct for safety is the correct one. Hope that she never comes to a true understanding of the conditions you describe, which could only result from living the life, with real subjection to all its perils. She's only a child - your character will show itself in her in due time.

Christine,

I had in mind mud huts with outside plumbing and not enough clothes to wear, and sorrow of all kinds. You know, what passes for reality on much of the planet.

I know of many such places, most of which would be perfectly safe for a teenager. Please don't imagine, though, that sorrow dominates. There is no lack of it, but there is joy as well. I've lived for extended periods in a number of remote 3rd world areas, and one thing I've noted is that while sorrow abounds, depression seems virtually nonexistant. I sometimes think we've done a better job of removing our coping mechanisms than we have of removing our sorrows.
