The 960-based I2O architecture has not achieved the success Intel had hoped for. Intel continues to work to include some class of I2O in future architectural thinking but it is increasingly being supplanted by high performance message passing using VI architecture principles. The next generation of I/O systems will be as different from what we see today as PCI was from ISA. Intel will be announcing some specifications in this area next week, the article in

gives a pretty good idea of Intel's current thinking on this. But Intel has not managed to build much industry consensus behind this specific architecture, so Intel will probably shift direction again to get more of the big players into the boat.
