M2 PRESSWIRE-6 November 1998-3COM: 3Com Corporation and Bull partner to enable Internet remote access with SS#7 (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Paris, France -- 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) and Bull today announced an interoperability solution providing Signal System 7 (SS#7) integration that will allow carriers and network service providers (NSPs) to roll out truly carrier scaleable Internet deployment, including data, voice and fax services, on their existing data infrastructure.

Enhanced integration, reduced costs, increased scalability The 3Com/Bull solution allows NSPs with access to the SS#7 signaling network to directly connect their 3Com Total Control multiservice access platform to the telephone trunk network. Benefits of this solution include enhanced integration into the telephone network, reduced network connection costs, increased scalability, and integrated management into the telephone network's operation support systems. The two companies have entered into an agreement that calls for common marketing and development of the solution.

"With this solution, carriers and NSPs now can make a smooth migration toward revenue-generating Internet services, like voice, data and fax," said Ross Manire, Vice President and General Manager, 3Com Carrier Systems. "We have combined the best offerings of the two companies-3Com in remote access, and Bull as a leading SS#7 vendor."

"This agreement reinforces the commitment of Bull to develop dedicated products for the telecommunications operators, especially in the fast growing Internet arena," said Don Zereski, Bull's General Director of Operations.

Bull has entered a new and highly ambitious phase of business development. Its strategy is based on a strong focus on selected domains of excellence that will enable Bull customers to successfully move into the new networked and customer-centric world.

Bull positions itself as a leading provider of secure and dependable IT products and services in the networked world. Third European Integrator, Bull is focusing its services businesses with a special emphasis on Internet related services.

Smooth Integration of the best of breed technologies The joint solution integrates 3Com's Total Control multiservice access platform and the NASgate7 Gateway, which is based on Bull's general purpose PowerSS7 platform and is already deployed in several hundred sites. The NASgate7 translates SS#7 signaling messages into the 3Com's SLAP protocol (Signaling LAN Application Protocol) as the first release. 3Com and Bull will continue to participate in related industry and standards forums as this new multiservice call control architecture evolves. 3Com is an active member and contributor to a number of related forums, including the IPDC technical advisory council and the Bellcore sponsored SGCP group, among others.

The integration of the SS#7 signaling protocol is possible on both existing and new Total Control systems through the addition of the SS#7i signaling interface card and by reconfiguring the existing HiPer DSP cards with a simple software download, thus enhancing the continued investment protection offered by using the Total Control platform.

The solution includes the 3Com's leading remote access product, the Total Control multiservice access platform. Total Control perfectly fulfills the requirements of Network operators. Powerful, flexible and evolutionary, it includes connectivity to LAN and WAN networks such as Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, ATM and Frame Relay.

The high availability of the NASgate7, based on a redundant architecture including two Bull Escala machines running under AIX, is ensured by the Bull SecurWare Cluster software already used in numerous Internet projects, including Internet phone directories such as "PagesZoom" and the Operation Support System of NSPs such as Wanadoo.

All gateway information is stored in an object-oriented database. An available API allows operators to develop additional specific applications. In addition, an integrated and centralised management solution of the NAS and the gateway based on ISM Open Master guarantees optimised operation of the network.

Steve,

>>DELL: DELL, NETAPP TEAM ON NETWORK STORAGE - 11/06/98 <<

I still haven't put the time to research net storage apps,
but I think it's going to be bigger than you suspect. It
was also very interesting to hear that you think there's
big margins in it on the COMS side of it.

Then again, the whole tech world seems about ready for
another huge wave of progress...technically and financially.

M2 PRESSWIRE-6 November 1998-3COM: 3Com selects Gadzoox Networks as strategic ally for new Storage Area Network initiative (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

* Companies form comprehensive alliance aimed at accelerating the development of the SAN market

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Gadzoox Networks, Inc., the forerunner in SAN (storage area networking) technology, and 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) a global networking solutions provider announced today a multifaceted agreement that includes an equity investment in Gadzoox, a seat on Gadzoox' Board of Directors and the joint development of advanced products, technologies and architecture for SANs. The relationship is targeted at expediting the development of the emerging SAN market segment and guiding its expansive growth towards mainstream deployment.

"As a worldwide leader in networking, 3Com has demonstrated the leadership and commitment necessary to transform the SAN market from its emerging stages into a broad-based networking market," said Gadzoox' president and CEO, Bill Sickler. "As market leaders that share a common vision, the relationship between Gadzoox and 3Com marks a turning point that promises to advance the SAN market as a whole."

Based on open standard Fibre Channel technology, SANs create a network "behind the server" dedicated to the interconnection of enterprise servers and storage subsystems. By providing a flexible networked storage environment, SANs provide increased data availability, storage scalability, and system performance at a lower total cost of ownership than alternative approaches.

"With nearly twenty years of experience in open, standards-based networking, 3Com has a proven record of leading the development of new markets," said Doug Spreng, senior vice president of 3Com's Client Access Business Unit. "Our Storage Area Networking market entry and the deployment of the Fibre Channel technology represents an opportunity for us to extend our networking expertise to drive the development of a mainstream, enterprise market for SAN infrastructure products."

Gadzoox, the leading market innovator that coined the term "storage area network", has continually demonstrated its technological leadership through a number of ground breaking accomplishments. These industry first product achievements include: * Bitstrip - gigabit Fibre Channel hub * Gibraltar - managed Fibre Channel hub * Ventana - SAN management software application

Hardware and software products resulting from the joint development activities are expected to be available in 1999.

Gadzoox' recent round of funding totaled $26 million and included global networking leader 3Com and Fibre Channel storage leader Seagate Technology. These investments strategically position Gadzoox as the only SAN developer with leaders in both the storage and networking market segments. 3Com's Doug Spreng will join the Gadzoox' Board of Directors as will Steve Luczo, Seagate president and CEO of Seagate.

About Gadzoox Gadzoox Networks, Inc. is the global leader in SAN (storage area network) products. The company brings innovative networking solutions to storage with highly scaleable, managed SAN solutions based on Gadzoox' full range of Fibre Channel hubs, switches and management products. Gadzoox' product strategy fully supports building the enterprise SAN architecture in a modular fashion while providing maximum investment protection for the existing infrastructure. Headquartered in San Jose, CA, Gadzoox is privately held. For more information, visit the company's web site at gadzoox.com or call 888.423.3222.
