To mmeggs: Thanks. Appreciate your professional view. And BTW by no means do I advocate the use of 4 times the quarterly per share earnings even as a quick and dirty means of estimation as a general proposition. Dangerous for sure - and potentially misleading. It is just that as a long time Q follower, I thought that the .66 was the "real" quarterly number and that this last quarter was the beginning of a more smooth set of quarterly earnings than in the past. Huge past variations were due to growing pains, major shocks, learning curve glitches, "exogenous factors" dear to heart of economists, et al. Thought, and still think, much of that stuff is behind us. But surprises lurk ahead no doubt. Hopefully more positive than negative. :-) Chaz

"Hopefully the association will make it more palatable to other brokers and clients as well. My gut feeling though, is that they'll just say "hmm, interesting" and buy more MSFT."

That rings true. When Superconductor Technologies, VLSI and others get deals to work in with QUALCOMM or even form joint ventures, I tend to look at them and think, "Hmm, interesting, QUALCOMM is sure getting some broad associations in place which must strengthen them further" and I buy more QUALCOMM, not VLSI.

If L M Ericsson signs a licence agreement, I won't think, "Hot damn! Hit me with some L M Ericsson shares". I'll think, "Yippeee! QUALCOMM has got the whole thing sewn up" and buy more Q!

Same as hearing of the MSFT deal makes me think "Wow! Q! has got some serious serious major scale financial backing" which lends confidence to me in regard to QUALCOMM prospects.

So there must be a mixture of halo effects. The MSFT lovers will feel enhanced with MSFT and the Q! lovers will feel enhanced in their belief in Q! prospects. Some Q! lovers will think "Arrgghhhh! Here comes MSFT to carve up Q! Abandon ship!!!" [qdog for example!]

I guess we find out in a couple of days when Mr Market reacts to what they tell us. So far, it is, "Ho Hum! What's Alan Green$pan doing?"
