>>It's nice that you're seeing these Compaq ads all over the place, but I've been really concerned about another aspect of CPQ's marketing - their weekly two-page spreads in Business Week. I haven't seen a mention of the Zip drive (at least in the Mid-Atlantic runs of the magazine) in any of their featured models. In fact, the only mentioned removable drive is the LS-120, which is one of their listed options. Any idea of what's going on? IOM's relationship with Compaq is one of the most encouraging developments of the past six months<< Zak - Compaq has been selling computers with Zip built in for much longer than six months. But it's not surprising that they do continue to sell and promote, somewhat, the LS-120. Compaq was one of the early backers of the LS-120, and the first computer company to put them into business-oriented machines. Compaqs with LS-120 were first available in May of 1996, if I'm not mistaken, which was well before you could buy the drive as a separate item. Many people believed that with Compaq backing it, the LS-120 was sure to become the next standard floppy, and that Zip had no chance. But that was more than two years and about 14 million Zip drives ago. When Compaq finally started offering a computer with Zip built in, which I believe was sometime last year, it was considered a big breakthrough for Zip, since Compaq had been so solidly behind the LS-120 at first. Many of our resident bears had said Zips in Compaqs would never happen. Some Compaq business models do still come with LS-120 standard, I believe. In the consumer lines, though, you find Zip. Hence the mention of only LS-120 in the Business Week ads. - Allen
