Rob,

I understand how MACD can be interpreted. In fact, this other indicator that I've been using is interpreted in much the same way.

In Metastock it is constructed like this:
MACD() - Mov(MACD(), 9, E)

Elder calls this the "MACD histogram". Doing a full-text search of SI for MACD histogram turns up a few other posts supporting this terminology.

TC2000 gives us a histogram of the MACD indicator rather than this "MACD histogram".

[Edit] - If you have QP2, look at the help file for MACD Indicator, it has a good illustration in addition to this description:

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator is displayed as two lines and a histogram. The MACD line results from the difference of two exponential moving averages (EMA). The second line is a signal line that is an EMA of the MACD line. The histogram displays the size of the difference between the two lines.
