Herb,

I've seen this same poorly written garbage in 3 or 4 articles now. Its like a kid that copies the class dunce's homework. Obviously, when they mention 818,000 and 237,000 drives they are talking only about Jaz vs. SparQ. But, then they immediately go right into how SyQuest hasn't been able to compete with the Zip.

I suppose this is one of those "news" items, because it sure doesn't count as analysis.

...Section: News Trends & Analysis

...SyQuest was also losing the battle against its only real competitor, Iomega. Last year, Iomega shipped 818,000 drives worldwide, compared with SyQuest's 237,000 drives , according to Disk/Trend.

"SyQuest has been losing ground to Iomega's Zip drive for a while," says Ray Freeman, analyst for Freeman Associates...

RE: Drives Shipped - Article Only Includes Jaz

>> Iomega shipped 818,000 drives worldwide, compared with SyQuest's 237,000 drives <<

As Troy pointed out, that number is only Jaz drives. If you look on Iomega's web site (or my Iomega Stats page), you'll see that they now disclose drive unit sales for Zip, Jaz, and Ditto by quarter. The 818,000 matches exactly.

Herb -

Yes, that article really is a garbled piece of ... I'll say 'nonsense'.

The author apparently doesn't realize that the comments by the Disk/ Trends President refer only to removable cartridge hard disk sales, as opposed to removable storage overall.

Throughout the article he remains confused about the fact that there is a difference.

Now this is a guy we should send some e-mail to. Unlike Herb Greenberg, he probably has nothing against Iomega, and is doing his best.

The main point he makes, that SyQuest overestimated the market for high-capacity hard disk removable storage, may be correct. That will probably turn out to be a problem for Castlewood, too.

The other problem, for both SyQuest and Castlewood, is that Iomega's brand position is such that when people do buy hard disk removable storage, they prefer Iomega. I'm speaking of average numbers, based on sales figures, not individual people. Of course, one of the biggest reasons for this is that Iomega got into that market first, which means that if you want to exchange data with others, you're better off buying Jaz.
