I know of no study and it could all be hear say but I have noticed stocks that are hard to borrow often make explosive moves up early in their rises. Just seems to make sense that a stock that goes up fast that shouldn't would attract more shorts. These early shorters then get caught by the late comers trying to get in the upward momentum play and drive the price higher and inadvertantly squeeze the shorts which keeps the cycle goign until finally the momentum slows enough due to shorters pausing and the momentum guys tiring. This is when the big down moves can finally be played.

Sounds kind of like the DOW right now huh?
