Alan, the ordinary registered voter generally does know what agenda the party is supporting in the present. But Michael was asking about its agenda for the FUTURE. Only someone who is active in the party, or active in some other organization seeking the party's supportfor its own agenda(the Sierra Club, say), is going to have a hand in shaping the FUTURE agenda.

Note that I was speaking of "ordinary" (i.e., non-activist) registered Republicans as well as Democrats. Many "ordinary" voters, of whatever party, feel no particular loyalty to the party they are registered in. As I said in an earlier post, many register in a party, rather than just as Independents, because that way they can participate in primaries as well as the general elections...And if they don't like the candidate the primary comes up with, they will often turn around and vote for the candidate of the other party...

Why the comment about "spin"? Not nice. I, for one, am perfectly willing to talk about what I would LIKE the the Democratic Party's vision to be in the future (although it can be unnerving to do that before a clearly unfriendly audience). But I cannot guarantee you that it WILL BE the party's vision.

P.S. I once WAS a Democratic activist, fighting a VERY uphill battle as Democratic Town Chairman in a small, heavily Republican town. I could have answered Michael's question more authoritatively in those days -- but that was many moons ago.

alan, that's about what I expected actually. :-)

Wouldn't you think it would strike people as rather odd that NOONE is able to describe what the Democratic party stands for? I know if I spent hours upon hours defending someone of a particular party I would at least believe in a part of their message, vision or principles first.

Maybe we can help answer it for them alan.

The vision of most Democrats goes something like this....

1. God should be removed from every public place in America. Especially any hint and reference to it in schools.
2. We should encourage as many abortions as possible, even if we have to go so far as believing that during actual birth the baby is not a life yet.
3. The religios right and all that they stand for should be silenced. We can use terms like "political correctness" in order to accomplish this.
4. Government spending is what creates jobs and prosperity in America. We should tax the rich more. (anyone earning more than 65K a year) in order to pay for day care for every child in America. After all government day-care can raise kids much better than those less than adequate stay at home moms.
5. Social Security is the greatest working program in America. Changing it in any way is tantamount to genecide on the elderly.
6. Our government schools are bastions of greatness. The only thing lacking is more money to make it work.
7. Cigarettes should be taxed at 10.00 dollars a pack in order to pay for anti-smoking programs.
8. Privatizing our airline and telecommunications system was the worst thing to happen in America. We need to stop this free-enterprise mentality and have the government control these entities with an iron fist.
9. Condoms should be handed out in kindegarden, we can't afford to trust parents to educate their kids about sexuality.
10. There is no moral right and wrong, we have no guiding principles about morality. Anything goes, accept if it's done by a Republican, then we scream bloody murder.
11. Oh, and most importantly...Privacy is our highest priority, except if it's a Democratic President and he needs to get dirt on his opponents. Then it's ok to rifle through FBI files for months.

I believe that comes close to the highlights from the last few years alan. :-)
