Singapore's StarHub Selects Ascend Equipment to Build Telecom Network
of the Future

Singapore's Second Telecommunications Carrier Chooses Ascend to Build Next
Generation IP-based Data Network

SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1998-- Ascend Communications,
Inc., (Nasdaq:ASND - news), a leader in wide area networking (WAN)
solutions for providers and users of the next generation public network, has been
awarded a major contract to deploy IP-based equipment for the data network of
Singapore's latest telecommunications carrier, StarHub Pte Ltd. Based on the solution
provided by Ascend, StarHub will be the first carrier in Singapore to deploy
a network architecture that provides the capability to transport voice, data and other
services on a single IP-based network.

Under the agreement, Ascend will provide Frame Relay, asynchronous transfer mode
(ATM) and IP products that will form the backbone of StarHub's network.
This includes Ascend's GX550, CBX500 and STDX9000 switches. With Ascend's
solution, StarHub is able to provision data across a backbone that will scale
and adapt to ever increasing volumes of data traffic.

StarHub has also purchased Ascend's market-leading NavisCore and NavisXtend
network management system software to enable seamless customer management
and monitoring. In addition, the carrier has acquired Ascend solutions that offer varying
levels of Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreement (SLA)
facilities, allowing StarHub the flexibility of offering various services to its customers.
Completing this network solution is an open-standards billing interface from
Ascend that allows billing integration across services.

Mr. Graham Moore, senior vice president, Commercial Services of StarHub said,
''We looked at all the major network vendors in the market and Ascend is a
clear leader in this field. Their architecture will allow us to provide the high quality
solutions for our customers. In addition, they have strong capabilities in deploying
QoS and in the field of Virtual Private Networking.''

According to Tony Wise, vice president, Asia Pacific, Ascend Communications, ''We
are honored that StarHub has chosen our solution for their data network. In
line with our vision of building the next generation public network, Ascend proposed a
new generation network architecture comprising Frame Relay, ATM and IP
products to StarHub. Our aim was to work with StarHub in offering them a
leading-edge solution that would make them a world class carrier, offering the latest
services to customers in an efficient network that utilizes the technologies of
tomorrow.''

This is very significant news based on this point:
" it is a major contract to deploy IP-based equipment for the data network of
Singapore's latest telecommunications carrier"
IP-based network? That's CSCO's very own turf. IMO, the competition is really
heating up in this high-end IP market. It will get even much more intense when all the
other startups as well as LU and NT come in with their latest and greatest products.
