Semtech Introduces First BiCMOS High Speed Synchronous Dual MOSFET Driver; New Product Supports Very Fast Power Supplies
NEWBURY PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1998--Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC), a leading manufacturer of high-quality analog semiconductor products, Monday announced the SC1405TS as Semtech's new single input, dual output MOSFET driver IC.

The SC1405 is a high-performance, synchronous MOSFET driver designed to operate with a single output high frequency PWM controller for use in switching power supplies, motor control and Class-D amplifier applications.

Unlike discrete solutions, the SC1405 is designed to assure very fast rise and fall times and ultra low propagation delays in order to operate at frequencies as high as 1MHz and deliver high gate-drive currents. Because the SC1405 can achieve switching times below 20 nano seconds (ns), switching losses are minimized.

The unique design implements shoot-through protection via a combination of adaptive or programmable methods. The SC1405 can be simply interfaced to a low cost, low current single output PWM controller to create a high-speed, high-current synchronous power supply. If desired, the device can operate in a power-saving mode by turning off the bottom MOSFET and operating in nonsynchronous fashion.

The SC1405's low profile TSSOP-14 package and drive capability make it ideal for the Class-D amplifiers and motor control applications. The SC1405 implements independent overvoltage protection, power ready, and dynamic set point switching drive, which provide a signal in phase with the bottom gate drive for external circuitry.

When the enable pin is held low, the quiescent current drops to less than 10uA, thus enhancing standby efficiency. This makes the SC1405 suitable for portable computer applications.

"The SC1405 was developed to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency on the notebook power supply. The SC1405 allows flexibility in motherboard design, due to the fact that the PWM controller can be positioned anywhere on the board," stated Kirk Hoffman, product marketing engineer for Semtech's Power Management Group.

The SC1405 is available in tubes of 98 pieces or on tape and reel. Samples and evaluation boards are available from the factory with production shipments early November.

The SC1405 is available through Semtech's network of sales representatives and distribution channels (part number SC1405TS) and is priced at $1.65 (10k piece quantities). Data sheets are available from Semtech by calling 805/498-2111, or by downloading them from the company's Web site at www.semtech.com.
