Friday November 6 4:22 PM ET : Enron works on Internet data network

SAN FRANCISCO (Wired) - Enron Communications announced a deal Tuesday with Cisco Systems and Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq:CIEN - news) that the company
expects will move it closer its goal of building a nationwide Internet protocol data network.

The IP backbone is expected to provide a high-speed data transfer alternative to the public telephone system. It will be built alongside the natural gas pipelines
owned by Enron, Enron Communications' parent company, which operates energy and water facilities worldwide.

The company has already begun construction on two routes of the backbone, but will be leasing lines from other carriers to offer a national network. Enron began
construction on a Portland, Oregon, to Los Angeles line last year, and broke ground on its Salt Lake City to Houston route on 21 October.

Those lines will be completed by late 1998 and late 1999 respectively.

Enron spokesperson Tracy Smith said the new lines would allow Internet service providers to offer new applications and services to consumers that require a bigger data pipeline.

This is very sigificant for CIEN, and its technology is key for this network. Note that CIEN IP/ATM Direct Connect over DWDM Metro switch can be hooked to any IP Router, not only CSCO. This effectively opens up CIEN to get opportunities like this network using other routers' vendors such as ASND, COMS.
