Re: "If they can't make enough of them, it's probably not a technical problem, but most likely an overall demand problem.. they have a lot of K6-2 customers now.. they have to be careful how the balance the transition. This is something that even Intel has had problems with (product transitions)."

OK, I can buy that as one possible explanation. There are others.

Steve, <how the balance the transition [to Sharpy]>
Technical problems are always a factor. The
question is how big. It is apparent that
Sharptooth with 256k of cache must yield
somewhat lower than the smaller cacheless
K6-2. The real question is whether the
potential markup for K6-3 will offset
the yield decrease. Keep also in mind
that the name of the game is still MHZs,
and the current spot is 400MHz. I am
much sure it has no sense for AMD to release
a 300MHz-K6-3 even if the yield is 100%,
because the sale price would not offset
the lower die per wafer (just due to bigger
die size). Therefore AMD need to push K6-3
to 400MHz area, which must be quite a
technical challenge.

The other factor is the FAB wafer allocation.
In production-constrained environment and
huge booking for regular K6-2, it might be
tough to find a room for new product.
We do not know all those numbers to judge.
Just relax and be patient.

Regards,

- Ali
