Dell has done a great job in both sales and service to north american corporate customers, and CPQ has dropped the ball on several occasions. The CPQ laptop line has shown spotty quality - some products are good, others are a joke. The DEC laptop line, by comparison, is first rate in both quality and performance. DEC's laptop people are now running the show and I expect a much stronger laptop story in '99. CPQ's corporate desktops are consistently high quality but here again, the north american service story was not good in '98. As DEC's service comes on line, that story should improve - after all, it was DEC service which earned Dell their high marks. Look for a major turnaround in 1H99 on these issues.

BTW, Dell will have to work hard to keep their service satisfaction high as they break in their new service partners,

vepoc,
The DEC purchase was to improve service. Hope it works. Like the article said, there is no real IT manager loyalty on desk tops. I think they write specifications on what they want and put the specifications out to bidders. The company that meets the specifications and has the low bid gets the order.

I think the article was positive. the score differences were only a few points on a scale of 100. It mention improvements in quality and market share for compac.

RE: "...Some nasty comments on CPQ here: anybody care to comment?..."

I once read an anonymous quote somewhere which went something like this:

"There are three types of lies, white lies, black lies and statistics, in order of severity"

My question would be, based on the statistics which tell us that the CPQ market share is MUCH greater than DELL, how did they select the 278 Fortune 1000 companies, and are the results corrected for the statistical sample?

Otherwise, I agree that the spin put on the results is quite negative considering that the figures for CPQ actually show an improvement.
