Are you sure it was a legitimate Bell Atlantic employee who told you what (if it is accurate) sounds like more "here we go again ..." type news ?

Maybe it was an imposter. Maybe it was a certain Finnish fan of Nokia .

Jon.

Jason:

(a) Here's a surprise...there is NO handoff from analog to digital for any of Qualcomm's phones. Once defaulting to analog you stay there until a new call can be originated on digital.

(b) To my knowledge, the Q800 is based on the same chipset as the QCP family and there should be no reason for any kind of structural performance disadvantage, i.e. what works for the QCP-820s should work for the Q800 EXCEPT that the Q800 has NO external antenna, which could theoretically impact range and sensitivity.

(c) I got a Q800 from QC on Friday and played with it all weekend. Although I am obviously biased, I think its a terrific phone. I had no problems with handoff or digital/analog transitions or voice quality or anything else for that matter. It has a number of clever features and the form factor is more convenient than I had previously imagined.

(d) Nothing that I have heard from the company suggests that the handset operation is the gating issue for calendar Q4. Conditions in emerging markets such as Mexico could impact infrastructure shipments and that is what the company is concerned about.

Best regards,

Gregg

Marginmike,
I would not hold a salesperson responsible for the exact reason why the Q phone is not available. Let us know the follow up. I wonder what this guy's supervisor says? Could there be a difference in commission to the store or person depending on the phone brand? You may still be on to a story here.
