November 9, 1998 Tech Briefs Technology Briefs Trans World to Launch Online Music Store Trans World Entertainment Corp., Albany, N.Y., one of the nation's largest music retailers, will officially launch an online music store on Monday. The site, dubbed The Web's Entertainment Center, or TWEC.com, is the latest entrant in an increasingly crowded sector of Internet retailing. Trans World recently announced it would acquire Camelot Music, augmenting a line-up of bricks-and-mortar retail outlets that includes Coconuts, F.Y.E., Planet Music, Record Town, Strawberries and Waxie Maxies. The company plans to extensively promote its online operations inside its retail stores. Analysts said TWEC.com would face stiff competition from existing Internet retailers CDnow Inc. and N2K Inc., which recently agreed to merge. Amazon.com has also become a force in the music market with a CD store launched earlier this summer. "I think they will be a little more challenged than a lot of other bricks-and-mortar stores because they have different brand names," Ken Cassar, an analyst at market research firm Jupiter Communications, said of Trans World. Softbank Acquires Stake in Buycomp.com Softbank Corp., Tokyo, bought a 9.9% stake in Buycomp.com for $40 million. Buycomp.com said Softbank's Technology Ventures unit acquired a 10.25% ownership in Buycomp.com for $20 million in August. Based on the combined capital, Buycomp.com, Aliso Viejo, Calif., says it is now valued at $400 million. Softbank Holdings is the holding company for all of Japanese software company Softbank Corp.'s U.S.-based activities. Its major operating companies include Ziff-Davis Inc., Kingston Technology Co., and UTStarcom.
