nikko, re >When I disconnect from the internet my computer freezes up?<

This happened to a friend who had Biggernet for an ISP.
This ISP was free, but kept an ad window on your desktop.

I don't have the answer, but would try the possible variations:
disconnect the modem but leave browser open.
close browser then disconnect modem.
What kind of machine/browser etc do you have?

G.

I did have an intermittent problem with the computer freezing up when I tried to disconnect. It usually occurred if I accidently tried to disconnect when I was still trying to access a site.

When I installed Compuserve 4, it came with a newer version of the Dial-Up and I have not had the problem since then. The annoyance now is trying to right-click that tiny icon to disconnect. Oh well.

I have that problem on my old computer. I don't know what causes it, but I have heard that if you have a "soft" modem--which lets the CPU do some of the processing that the modem chip would normally do--then the CPU can get overloaded and cause freezes, especially if it's not a powerful CPU. I suspected this was my problem because that computer came with a lot of cheap stuff and they had to replace the modem once for a malfunction (something different). Of course, this would suppose that there is a surge of processing going on in the modem when you disconnect, which I don't know to be true or not.

"When I disconnect from the internet my computer freezes up."
A solution that I have started to use that has worked so far is to go to go directly to the Start button and shut down the computer in the conventional manner. This presumes that you don't want to continue to use the computer off line. So far the system has not frozen up on me using this method.
